Castiglione della Pescaia
“Castiglione della Pescaia” is an evocative medieval town, today home to 7359 people. The town rises on a headland along the “Maremma’s” coastline and its origins have been traced back to the Roman/Etruscan period.
This town, through the years, has been awarded multiple times by leading italian environmentalist associations (Legambiente) and tourist organizations (Touring Club) as one of the most relevant touristic spots along the “Tirreno’s” coastline. In fact, the area is characterized by many beautiful and clean beaches (Blu Flags).
“Castiglione della Pescaia” represents also an ideal starting point for those interested in visiting beautiful natural reserves like the “Parco della Diaccia Botrona” and the “Parco della Maremma” as well for those interested in visiting interesting Etruscan and Roman archeological sites like Roselle, Vetulonia and Populonia.
Just a few kilometers outside the town center, it is possible to find la “Casa Rossa” (Red House) which is the entry point to the “Daccia Botrona’s” natural reserve; this natural reserve includes the last remaining parts of the swamp, which originally covered most of the “Maremma’s” area. Traveling along the road which connects “Castiglione della Pescaia” and “Marina di Grosseto” you will find the “Pineta del Tombolo” which covers over 10km of the coastline between the two towns.
Not far from the town center, it is possible to find large and well-known beaches like “Le Rocchette”, “Punta Ala” and the most renowned “Cala Violina”; the latter is considered by “Legambiente” as one of the nicest beaches in Italy. “Cala Violina” is reachable only on foot or by bike and by horse, crossing a path wrapped in the local type of vegetation called “Macchia Mediterranea”.
