The creeks of Argentario

CALA DEL GESSO
The first stretch of coastline, which reaches Cala di Gesso, is dotted with villas and cottages that, more or less hidden in the vegetation, guarantee the existence of paths to reach the beach. Continuing on, the Argentario’s flank becomes steeper and steeper, making it really difficult to reach the sea from land. If, on the contrary, you find yourself in a boat, you can fully enjoy these places where there are usually not many people.
To reach it: at Km 5+900 of the Via Panoramica (Provincial Road 65) in Porto Santo Stefano, take the asphalted road on the right (as Cala del Bove), which after a short stretch (about 350 metres) comes to a gate. From here, take a fairly demanding footpath that leads to the beach in about 15 minutes.

CALA DEL BOVE
This is a gravel and pebble cove that takes its name from the presence, around the 1950s, of the ‘sea ox’, or monk seal (Monachus monachus). The beach is a true paradise for diving enthusiasts; the seabed is rich in fish species, such as octopus, moray eels and lobsters, but also corals and anemones.
How to get there: at Km 5+900 of the Via Panoramica (Provincial Road 65) in Porto Santo Stefano, take the asphalted road on the right (as Cala del Gesso), which after 1.5 km leads to a gate, on the right of which is a footpath that leads to the Cala del Bove reef in about 15 minutes.

PUNTA NERA
This is a small beach along the cliffs leading to Porto di Santo Stefano.
How to get there: access from the ‘Bionda’ beach along the cliff in the direction of Porto Santo Stefano.
Parking: leave your car at the port car park or at Pozzarello.
Winds: exposure to north and north-easterly winds (Tramontana and Grecale).
Special notes: it looks like a private beach but it is not.

LA CANTONIERA
Free beach and bathing establishment. One of the residents’ favourite beaches.
How to get there: it can be reached by following the road built on the site of the former railway, either from Porto Santo Stefano (after the first tunnel) or from Pozzarello (after two tunnels).
Parking: the tunnels are often closed to traffic. Leave your cars at the port car park or at Pozzarello.
Winds: exposed to northern winds (Tramontana and Maestrale).

IL MOLETTO
Free beach and bathing establishment.
How to get there: direct access from Via del Molo (Harbour Master’s Office).
Parking: Lungomare dei Navigatori, Porto Santo Stefano.
Winds: Mistral, Tramontana and Grecale.
