Tuscany is synonymous with wines and wineries throughout the world that meet the tastes of the most discerning palates. In Maremma, Bolgheri DOC is synonymous with elegance, balance and vigour. In contrast to other famous Tuscan wines such as Chianti and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are Sangiovese-based, Bolgheri DOC is composed mainly of French grapes, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with the addition of Syrah, Petit Verdot and, only on rare occasions, Sangiovese. This blend benefits from the impact of the mild climate of the sea and the clayey-sandy soil on the centuries-old vines typical of the Costa degli Etruschi.
Among the wineries to visit in Bolgheri are historic names and small producers including the renowned Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori), L’Ornellaia, which offers tastings, tours and contemporary art, Le Macchiole, which combines organic wine and art projects, and Grattamacco, known for its modernity and organic wines.
Just under an hour from Massa Marittima and the Pian dei Mucini Resort, a day in Bolgheri can be rounded off with a variety of opportunities to suit all tastes: strolling through the historic centre of Castagneto Carducci, between the castle tower of the Della Gherardesca counts and the places dear to the Nobel prize-winner for literature Giosuè Carducci, or visiting the first WWF area in Italy, Padule di Bolgheri
A 30-minute drive from Bolgheri, Castiglioncello, a hamlet of Rosignano Marittimo, with its clear waters, bays and cliffs and famous pine forest, is a must-see destination today as it was in the 1950s for famous actors, including the great Alberto Sordi.
