Events of the Maremma Summer 2024

To make holidays unforgettable.

The Maremma festivals offer an authentic and delicious experience through the celebration of local culinary traditions.

Among these, the Sagra del Baccalà (Salt Cod Festival) in Sant’Andrea al Civilesco (GR), now in its 33rd edition, and held from 24 July to 2 August and from 5 to 11 August, certainly stands out. Salt cod lovers will find plenty to eat: the menu offers a variety of specialities such as penne, tortelli, tagliatelle and polenta with salt cod sauce, salt cod soup, roast, fried and sautéed salt cod, and salt cod salad. There are of course other traditional Maremma dishes, as well as a large assortment of wines from the surrounding hills.

Also worthy of note is the Sagra della Bruschetta, in its 10th edition, from 3 to 11 August at the Circolo Il Giardino in the Capalbio countryside. Every evening, fans can enjoy bruschetta for all tastes and barbecued meat, celebrating the simple and genuine flavours of Maremma tradition.

The festive atmosphere, enriched by shows and craft markets, makes these festivals unmissable for those who wish to experience the heart of Maremma culture.

Music lovers can enjoy a variety of musical events in some of Tuscany’s most evocative locations, including the Grey Cat Jazz Festival and Lirica in Piazza, which are unmissable events of their kind.

From 26 July to 20 August, the Grey Cat Jazz Festival involves various locations, including Follonica and Massa Marittima, and hosts artists of international and Italian fame, with concerts ranging from contemporary jazz to more experimental performances. Highlights include a concert by Matteo Mancuso Trio on 3 August and one by Korale on 4 August at the Teatro Fonderia Leopolda in Follonica.

From 3 to 5 August, on the other hand, it is possible to attend Lirica in Piazza, now in its 35th edition, which transforms the central piazza into an open-air theatre, offering opera performances to the public. This year the programme includes classical operas interpreted by emerging and established talents, with a tribute to Giacomo Puccini on the centenary of his death.

The Maremma summer is also rich in cultural events celebrating history and literature.
Among the most eagerly awaited are ‘Salto della Contessa’ in Gavorrano and ‘Capalbio Libri’ in Capalbio, which offer unique experiences with historical re-enactments and literary encounters in evocative settings.

The ‘Salto della Contessa’ (Countess‘ Leap), on 3 August, re-enacts and celebrates the tragic legend of Countess Pia de’ Tolomei narrated by Dante Alighieri in The Divine Comedy, through a costume procession, shows and medieval music, thus transforming the village into a fascinating open-air theatre.

‘Capalbio Libri’, from 29 July to 3 August, a festival dedicated to reading and now in its 18th edition, offers meetings with authors, book presentations and debates, and promotes a passion for reading in the evocative Piazza dei Pini in the medieval village.
