Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages

The I Borgli più belli d’Italia (Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages) Association gathers no less than 217 wonders scattered throughout the Boot and we, here in Maremma, have five of them.
Have you ever seen them?
Let’s find out:

Montemerano, the intimate village in the municipality of Manciano, a few kilometres from the famous Terme di Saturnia spa resort. A maze of narrow streets among stone houses enriched by original wooden doors and colourful flowers adorning the stairways, this is how you are taken to the main square of the village, Piazza del Castello.

Pitigliano, the Little Jerusalem, the City of Tufa. Definitely worth seeing is the Synagogue, the Palazzo Orsini with its diocesan museum and, in addition to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie. Remember, as you leave Pitigliano, to take a look at it from the road: when the sun goes down, the light hits the tuff, the village is tinged with such bright colours that it leaves you breathless.

Sovana, famous for its Etruscan centre, is a medieval and Renaissance town and the seat of the bishopric. Don’t miss the Etruscan Necropolis, the Rocca Aldobrandesca, the Palazzo Pretorio and the churches of San Mamiliano, Santa Maria Maggiore and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.

Porto Ercole, the small port of the Argentario, a gem of our territory. Surrounded by forts of Renaissance origin, be sure to visit Forte Filippo, Forte Stella and the Rocca. We also recommend a drive along the Strada Panoramica that leads to the village of Porto Santo Stefano and, of course, a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the many Cale: Acqua Dolce, Le Viste, and Spiaggia Lunga.

Giglio Castello, the highest village on the island of Giglio. With its imposing Rocca Aldobrandesca and its perfectly preserved walls, together with some watchtowers, make this visit an ideal opportunity to cast one’s gaze over the Tyrrhenian Sea, passing the island of Giannutri to the southwest and the island of Montecristo to the west.
