Even with grey skies and a few drops of rain, the Maremma offers many emotions! Of course, the sea is out of the question, but don’t worry, below we suggest alternatives for all tastes.
Visiting the villages is a great idea both as a couple and as a family!
We start in Capalbio, which is easy and quick to reach via the Aurelia state road. Comfortable shoes and the visit begins!
The historic centre can only be visited on foot, entering through the double-arched gate surmounted by a plaque dating from 1418 and the Medici coat of arms from 1602. The original wooden and iron doorway will lead you into a crossroads of little alleyways and pretty corners. Don’t miss the original patrol walkway on the town’s crenellated walls. Then there is the delightful Piazza Magenta, as small as it is full of colour and cultural events during the summer. At sunset, linger on the walls with an excellent glass of red wine while watching the hills descend to the sea, and we recommend a meat dinner in one of the typical restaurants.
Montemerano, a pearl of the Maremma, a little further afield but certainly interesting. Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, this delightful medieval village is a maze of streets and stone stairways adorned with colourful flower pots. As you walk through its narrow streets, you will suddenly find yourself in Piazza del Castello and have the impression of being in a parallel reality, suspended in time, seductive and fascinating. A photo opportunity is a must! Also not to be missed is the Church of San Giorgio where the Madonna della Gattaiola by the Maestro di Montemerano is on display. And while you’re here, don’t forget to try the typical Trippa Montemeranese, enriched with nutmeg, cinnamon, fresh thyme, corn and cloves, served with beans or tomato sauce.
Are you looking for relaxation for body and mind? Then the Convent of the Passionists of Argentario is the place for you, immersed in greenery, a place of peace from which to admire Orbetello and the archipelago from above. As well as visiting the convent chapel, where Pope John Paul II stopped to pray during one of his visits in 2000, it is possible to stay for lunch or dinner at the ‘La Sorgente’ refuge where, in the shade of the trees, it will be a relief for the body and the palate to taste excellent dishes based on polenta, wild boar, mushrooms and much more…
Welcome to the Maremma, a land to discover and enjoy!
