1. Le Biancane: the Tuscany that smokes
• In Monterotondo Marittimo you’ll find one of Tuscany’s most unusual landscapes: the Le Biancane geosite. Its name comes from the pale colour of the exposed rocks, transformed by geothermal fluids.
• Walking along the trail, you’ll encounter fumaroles, clouds of steam, mineral-coloured rocks and warm ground. Here, geothermal fluids reach the surface, making visible a phenomenon that normally takes place deep beneath our feet.
• The trail starts from Via dei Lagoni Boraciferi and crosses the geothermal area towards the power plants. And you don’t necessarily need to book a guided tour: the Le Biancane trail is always open and free to access.
• In Monterotondo Marittimo you’ll find one of Tuscany’s most unusual landscapes: the Le Biancane geosite. Its name comes from the pale colour of the exposed rocks, transformed by geothermal fluids.

2. MUBIA: discovering why the earth smokes
• Before or after your walk, it’s worth visiting MUBIA – Geomuseo delle Biancane, located in the Lagoni area of Monterotondo Marittimo.
• The museum explains what is really happening beneath the ground through a multimedia experience dedicated to geothermal energy, the formation of minerals and rocks, and the geological characteristics that make the soil of Le Biancane so warm and colourful.
• Part of the exhibition also explores the relationship between people and energy: from the discovery and use of boric acid to the production of electricity through geothermal energy. Trails leading towards the geosite also start from MUBIA.

• The Metalliferous Hills owe their name to the extraordinary mineral wealth of the area. Copper, silver and other minerals influenced the economy and even the balance of power in this part of Tuscany for centuries.
• To really step into this story, visit Subterraneo – Museo della Miniera di Massa Marittima. This is not simply a museum filled with display cases, but an experience dedicated to the mining world, bringing visitors closer to the lives, tools and working conditions of miners.
• It also changes the way you look at Massa Marittima itself: behind its medieval image of towers, walls and Piazza Garibaldi lies a history deeply connected to what could be found beneath those hills.

4. September 2026: when art and geothermal energy speak the same language
• This year there is one more reason to create an itinerary between Massa Marittima and Monterotondo Marittimo. From 11 to 27 September 2026, the second edition of “Tutto è Energia” – “Everything is Energy” returns, an artistic and cultural event dedicated to energy as a fundamental principle of existence.
• The event involves both Massa Marittima and Monterotondo Marittimo, creating a fascinating connection with a territory where energy is not merely an abstract concept: at Le Biancane, you can literally see it emerging from the earth.
• At the heart of the event is a collective exhibition at Palazzo del Debbio in Massa Marittima, featuring painting, photography, graphic art, sculpture, installations and mixed-media works. The opening is scheduled for Friday, 11 September at 5:30 pm.
• The project brings together artists, institutions and local communities, exploring the concept of energy through different creative languages and connecting art, territory and contemporary culture.
