When you think of the Venice Carnival, your mind immediately conjures images of timeless charm…

A spectacle known all over the world, which behind the scenes hides a complex, fascinating and sometimes counterintuitive reality.

Precise dates, exclusive costs and changes to the official programme are part of everyday planning. If you want to experience the true essence of the Serenissima without falling into tourist traps, here are the 5 secrets you need to know.

1. The real dates of Carnival 2026: when should you come?
Non farti ingannare dal calendario commerciale. Sebbene le celebrazioni inizino ufficialmente il 31 gennaio, il cuore pulsante del Carnevale di Venezia 2026 va dal 7 al 17 febbraio. Per comprendere il vero ritmo della Don’t be misled by the commercial calendar. Although celebrations officially begin on 31 January, the true beating heart of the Venice Carnival 2026 runs from 7 to 17 February. To understand the real rhythm of the event, remember:
31 January – 6 February: this is the more commercial “pre‑Carnival” phase. The only truly authentic event not to be missed is the Venetian boat parade on 1 February.
7 February 2026: this is the key date. From this day onwards, the city fills with genuine passion and the most beautiful costumes.

2. The identity of the masks: passion vs professionalism
Contrary to popular belief, the most spectacular costumes you will see in St. Mark’s Square do not belong to paid performers. They are works of art created by enthusiasts and collectors from all over Europe, who spend months crafting their extraordinary outfits themselves, paying attention to every detail with incredible dedication.
Note for photographers: don’t expect to see these masterpieces before 7 February; true Carnival lovers follow the traditional rhythm of the festival.

3. Programme 2026: important cancellations and confirmations
Safety and logistics have led to significant changes in the official programme. It’s essential to know this before booking: – Cancelled events: the “Flight of the Angel” (8 February) and the “Flight of the Eagle” (15 February) will not take place due to safety reasons linked to restoration works on St. Mark’s Campanile and St. Mark’s Square. – Confirmed event: the iconic “Flight of the Lion” is confirmed for Shrove Tuesday, 17 February 2026, marking the grand finale of the celebrations.

4. The private Carnival: the (very expensive) palace balls
Alongside the free public festivities filling the streets, there is another, more secret and exclusive Carnival: the private masked balls. These elite events take place in the evenings inside historic Venetian palaces, reviving the splendour and traditions of the aristocracy of the Serenissima. Indicative prices for 2026 include:
Il Ballo del Doge (Scuola Grande della Misericordia): prices starting from €2,500 per person.
Ballo Minuetto 1800: prices starting from €780.
For those wishing to attend, the dress code is strict: a full period costume is not a suggestion, but a mandatory requirement.

5. The theme of 2026: “Olympus, at the origins of play”
In tribute to the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, the Carnival celebrates the Olympic spirit. Venice rediscovers its roots as a “stage of skill”, where in the past people competed in tests of strength and agility, anticipating the modern concept of the Olympics.
This theme is a direct homage to the Olympic spirit, celebrated alongside the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, to be held in Italy. At the same time, it is deeply rooted in Venetian history itself. In centuries past, Carnival was not only a celebration, but also a grand stage for public competitions, acrobatic performances and collective trials of skill, which in many ways foreshadowed the spirit of the modern Olympic Games.

Now that you’ve discovered the two worlds of Carnival — the spontaneous magic of the streets and the golden exclusivity of the palaces — the real question is not just which one you will experience, but how you will choose to become part of its living history.
