Lago dell’Accesa
about nine kilometers from Massa Marittima
With an area of just 14 hectares and a depth of up to 50 meters, this lake, of karst origin, is fed by underground springs that give its waters a crystal-clear color. Its shores, characterized by a clear sandy bottom and areas of shallow water, offer the possibility of swimming in the summer months, while also enjoying a small beach of fine sand, immersed in a unique natural setting.
the lake is an oasis of tranquility, perfect for those who wish to walk, picnic in the equipped areas or simply relax in contact with nature. Lake Accesa is also a habitat rich in wildlife, with trout, pike, carp and perch, as well as numerous species of waterfowl populating its shores, making it an ideal destination for birdwatchers.
In 2001 the area was transformed into a theme park dedicated to Etruscan civilization. Visitors can explore the remains of the five districts through paths equipped with information panels illustrating the characteristics of the ancient stone dwellings, drainage systems, metalworking furnaces, and necropolis with tumulus and pit tombs. Archaeological finds unearthed during excavations are displayed in the Massa Marittima Archaeological Museum, offering further evidence of the historical richness of this place.
Lake Accesa is also shrouded in legends that add to its fascination. It is said that before 1218, there was a plain planted with wheat instead of the lake. On July 26 of that year, some farmers, disobeying the tradition that wanted that day dedicated to St. Anne, patroness of reapers, decided to work instead of rest. The sky suddenly darkened, the earth began to shake, and a chasm opened that swallowed men and animals. In its place rose a small dark green lake, Lago dell’Accesa. It is said that, even today, on St. Anne’s Day, shouts, the prancing of horses and the ringing of bells of a vanished village can be heard coming from the lake.
