A day with alpacas: nature and special encounters in the Maremma

Just a few kilometres from Capalbio, there is a place where you can discover the Maremma countryside while walking alongside an alpaca.
Piani degli Alpaca is a farm surrounded by nature and home to hundreds of alpacas, as well as miniature ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, rabbits and many other animals.
Here, you do not simply come to watch them: you can enter the enclosures with the guides, feed the alpacas, learn about their habits and personalities, or set off on a real walk in their company.

1. Meet the alpacas up close
2. Set off on a walk together
3. Discover the farm animals

1. Enter the enclosure and meet the alpacas up close
• The Guided Alpaca Visit is the perfect experience to start with. Accompanied by the staff, you enter the farm’s enclosures directly, going far beyond simply observing the animals from behind a fence.

• During the approximately one-hour visit, you walk among a group of around 40 alpacas, learning to recognise their behaviour, characteristics and habits. The guides also tell you about the history of the farm and explain what daily life is like for the animals.

• One of the most enjoyable moments, especially for children, is feeding time: each participant receives a small bowl of feed and can personally feed the alpacas while following the staff’s instructions. You can also take photos and videos throughout the experience.

Duration: approximately 1 hour
Suitable for: all ages
Price: €18 adults | €14 children and teenagers up to 14 years old | free for children up to 3 years old
Booking: advance online booking is required on the Piani degli Alpaca website

2. An alpaca all to yourself: set off on a walk together
• If you are looking for an even more engaging experience, choose the Alpaca Walk. At the beginning, each participant is introduced to their own adventure companion and learns from the guides how to approach and lead the alpaca correctly using its halter.

• Then the walk begins. The route crosses the almond grove and the farm’s natural surroundings, with around an hour spent walking side by side with your alpaca. It is this time together that allows you to discover its personality: every alpaca has its own distinctive behaviour and character.

• Along the route, there are stops to enjoy the landscape, learn more about the animals and, of course, take photos and videos. Participants must be at least 14 years old to lead an alpaca themselves. Children aged 8 to 13 can still join the walk when accompanied by an adult.

Duration: approximately 60 minutes
Minimum age: 8 years
Minimum age to lead an alpaca: 14 years
Price with alpaca: €36
Accompanying guest without alpaca: €18

3. More than alpacas: discover the farm animals
• Alpacas are the stars of the show, but they are not the only residents of Piani. The farm is home to many other species living throughout the estate, giving children in particular the chance to discover the rural world up close.

• You can meet miniature ponies, miniature donkeys, llamas, miniature pigs, dwarf goats and Valais Blacknose sheep, as well as several breeds of rabbits and chickens. Among the more unusual animals are the Patagonian mara and the small Mini Highland cattle.

• The farm has been designed to allow guests to observe animals in a genuine agricultural setting, learning about their characteristics and habits without turning the encounter into a simple attraction.
It is the perfect choice for turning your alpaca experience into a full day discovering life on the farm.
