The Tarot Garden

A meeting place between man and nature

The Tarot Garden

In Garavicchio, nearby Capalbio, there is a “small Paradise corner, where man and nature meet”.

That is how was called by its architect Niki de Saint Phalle. The 22 Tarot cards are represented in Cyclopean sculptures, 12/15 meters high. Adults and children will be attracted by the fascinating shapes and by the whirling of colours and the many mirrors which cover the sculptures… a magic-like dimension!

The French artist Niki De Saint Phalle, author of many complex and often monumental installations like the Stravinsky Fountain (1983) settled in front of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, realized the Tarot Garden between the 1978 and the 1996 in the heart of the Maremma region. She has been helped by Jean Tinguely, sculptor of iron devices (the “méchaniques”) coming from industrial waste.

This esoteric garden is made up of huge sculptures (high among 12/15 meters) which represent the twenty-two Major Arcana of the Tarot cards. The park takes inspiration from the wonderful Park Guell of the architect Gaudì in Barcelona; we can see it not only from the materials but also because of its strong symbolically charged inside, held all over the garden.
The tour becomes an immersion in the fascinating world of the artist, a real cosmic place. In May, guided tours are organised. Book the tour directly in the Village, every Saturday in the late afternoon.
